The Man who Shot the 60's.
Sadly Brian Duffy just passed away.
His photography captured the spirit of the 60's and 70's, along with Bailey and Donovan.
They became as famous as the models, musicians and film stars they worked with. Like the famous people he photographed, he paved the way for others.
Duffy was there. It was his time..
Timing is everything
He shot them all ..
He shot the legends, the heroes of our time.. The demi-gods,
and the Master..
This cover for Aladdin Sane.
'Watching him dash away, swinging an old bouquet - dead roses
Sake and strange divine Uh-hu-hu-uh-hu-hu you'll make it
Passionate bright young things, takes him away to war - don't fake it
Sadden glissando strings
Uh-hu-hu-uh-hu-hu - you'll make it
Who'll love Aladdin Sane
Battle cries and champagne just in time for sunrise
Who'll love Aladdin Sane
Motor sensational, Paris or maybe hell - (I'm waiting)
Clutches of sad remains
Waits for Aladdin Sane - you'll make it
Oooh Who'll love Aladdin Sane
Millions weep a fountain, just in case of sunrise
Oooh Who'll love Aladdin Sane'.
This bloke, David Jones, was born and bred in Brixton.
(Some of the simplest names are the most creatively resonant).
Bowie influenced generations. The Thin White Duke still stands head and shoulders above them all.. His androgynous alter ego Ziggy and the Spiders. His career was marked by musical innovation, reinvention and striking visual ambiguity and creativity. We worshiped Ziggy, and Major Tom. He took us away.
He'd cut up words and sentences, re-arrange them and see how they would fall.. into surprisingly innovative new phrases, hybrid songs and meaning.
Bloody genius.
Architecture, Fashion, Music, Photography.. what's the difference?
It's all the same stuff.
Conviction, Vision, Faith.. within. No looking over your shoulder.
Spontaneity, No Fear, you gotta trust.
You've either got it, or you ain't. Duffy had it.
Thank you Duffy.
